Windows Media Streams don't work either. I think that the host is
confirming the destination. The streams work when I am in Canada with
no change in settings in the computer, because the hotel is buying it's
service from a Canadian ISP, as is Starbucks.

The message that I get doesn't say that I am in the US, it just says
that i appear to be outside Canada and I should call customer service if
I am in Canada.

Streams now a days are preceeded by a commercial. The commercial works,
but the stream only gives the above message that I am outside Canada.

CBC ironically, streams the news but blocks the commercials because I am
outside Canada. It shows a sign that the stream will resume shortly
with canned music. Then 120 seconds later, the broadcast resumes.
