Some of the third world countries are implementing or thinking in terms
of Linux as the standard. Because they are behind the curve, they don't
have the conversion expense of big companies who are set up in Windows.
China and Viet Nam, I have read, are good examples.

Microsoft sells special versions of Windows in those countries that are
a lot cheaper in order to be competitive. Those versions might not work
in the US because an internet site can tell by the backbone what country
you are in and they probably wouldn't validate or upgrade if the
computer was trying to go online from the US.

The Canadian Broadcasting Company and CTV are two web sites that won't
let me stream because they can tell that I am not in Canada, regardless
of what regional and language options I set on my Windows or Linux,
install. They only own the rights to the shows within Canada, and try
to sell the shows to US cable channels, giving them a vested interest in
respecting what rights they do and don't have.
