The real problem has been that the IP address may change when they work
on something upstream, and I won't even know about it until later in the
day. When the power fails, at least you know to check it.

With dyndns.org or no-ip.com you can have a local agent automatically keeping tabs on your current external address and updating accordingly. Basic service for that is free. Then just have you more official hostname CNAME alias to that.

I was using this approach until linode openned up their dns api, now I've got a ruby script that does it off their dns servers.
