Fios and Fixed IP:

Have been on residential Fios, for about 2 years. Love it. I'm using the router they provided (runs linux, don't have model number handy) It's wi-fi crapped out so I added a wireless access point. I've only had 5 different IP addresses this year, and each change is assocated with a neiborhood wide (or larger) power failure. Simply cycling the power on the router, or rebooting it gets me the same IP address back. It's been my assumption that either the system forgets what IP address I had previously if I'm offline a long time (hours ) or that parts of their system don't have auxiliary power.

I do a kind of poor mans dns with it. I store the DNS on a web page (login required) and I manually update 3 scripts that rsync and ssh to that box on the rare occasion that the IP address changes. ( lines I commented out and replaced is how I knew how many times it changed. )

Local servers:

I used to be a big believer in having personal control of hardware.

Currently the only reson I can think of to host a mail/web server in my house would be to be able to have access to a huge amount of physical storage , cheaply. (I can slap hard drives into a computer soo-- much cheaper than I can pay for a server to be expanded. ) I much prefer having the stuff hosted elsewere. And I'm paying ~40/month for my VPS server. (http://www.webintellects.com/index.php ) Most of what I am paying for above the base service is size, speed is also a factor. I'll have to shop around again, i've been there for a couple of years I should consider other options, but I'm hosting so much there (~20 domain names) , to move would be a huge pain, and their service has been fine.

I still keep local backups of everything. And with Fios, I could put it all back in just a couple of days ;-)
