To me the genius of Gnome is that you put the CD in, it installs what most people want, and then you take it from there. I've got my laptop loaded up with bells and whistles with Gnome but they slow your system down and become a whole new set of things that have to be configured.
If you really want Gnome looking like a billboard in Times Square you can, but most Gnome users want something that boots right up and lets you get to work.
