After about 10 hours of futzing, I'm definitely going back to Ubuntu
classic for now. Hopefully we'll have a chance to share experiences and
show off some of the progress the Unity folks have made at next months
meeting.
After Orion's suggestion I did install unity-2d on the netbook last
night, which is basically Unity Bar + Metacity. For the netbook this is
much better option, as the little intel graphics card is no longer being
strained with the compositor, which it really is barely up to.
