Finally got to this - and as near as I can work out, it does NOT work. The "Recovery" CDs (5 DVDs actually) created just fine, but won't start a recovery in a VBox session. This might be expected. They do start and present me with all the normal menu items, but when I initiate the recovery, an error occurs saying basically "these CDs cannot be used on this system" - or words to that effect. The procdess thinks it is some other computer I am trying to install to. So - I am reluctant to simply wipe out the OS on the current internal HD - However.... Does it make sense to simply pull the internal HD, replace it with the SSD, Boot the LiveCD and install Linux on this SSD, attaching the 750Gb previous internal HD in the external system and just use it for external storage. If I ever find I have a real need to really boot the full OS, I can simply put the drive back in? My primary concern today is L:inux. At this moment, I don't care a bit about W8, but I probably will in the future. I will most likely need to run some program (Visio, Photoshop) in at least a VBox session - but am stuck on creating one. I can live without for now though. It seems I need a real ISO image, and that the only way to get an ISO image (easily/legally) is to buy an update from some previous OS directly - I am not willing to give M$ MORE money for this so may have to find a way to get an image regardless... somehow. Hell - if it comes down to it, I would rather have 7 anyway! Until then, I suppose I may just pull the HD and put the SDD in and try that out. Not going to do it for some time though. I don't want to go and screw myself right off ;-) JC -- Eschew obfuscation and pompous prolixity. Light a man a fire, he is warm for the night. Light a man afire, he is warm for the rest of his life.
