That's right.  You might now something about "Windows Genuine Advantage" as to 
why this happens... the Win8 installation is locked to the "real" hardware, 
and thus cannot be installed into a Virtual machine.

This is why I'm recommending /shrinking/ the Windows8 installation as-it-is 
and dual-booting... because that will work [at least as far as Windows8 is 
concerned].

Yes that would work, but you're not going to want to swap the drive in-and-out 
of the machine like that, and /that/ Win8 installation won't work on other 
hardware because it's locked to /that/ laptop.
