Not 100% on this, but I believe it is the latter. The documentation is also
pretty clear that the disks cannot be used on any other system, so I
anticipated a restore would NOT work on a VM, but figured it was worth a
try.

Ahhh... Useful. Will spend some time there shortly. A quick reads seems to
offer some promise. I will get back with you on the rest after a bit.
