All 01 and 02 LS1's have the ls6 intake manifold and better tune. They also
have a slightly less aggressive cam to keep the power from increasing too
much. That makes them perfect candidates for a cam swap.

If you getting an LS1, get atleast an 2000 model year with each year being
better. That's when they upgraded the PCM, clutch hydraulics, and other
thing. 01+ gets the smaller cam, ls6 intake manifold, etc. Also of note is
the 2000+ ls1 throttle bodies have a larger throttle body cam (thing the
cable wraps around has a larger radius). This affect the throttle pedal
travel needed to fully open the throttle (larger radius means more travel
needed).

The '04 GTO is supposed to be the high water mark for LS1s. It has the LS6
intake which helps when adding headers, cam, etc. 305 is also a common
stock RWHP number for 04 GTOs but simple I/E bolt-ons and a tune get it to
350 rwhp. There are many 450 rwhp 04 GTO's running around with not much
more than a cam, TB and 5.3L modified heads. About the only nice thing
about getting a real LS6 for a swap is the valve springs are already there
for an additional 500 rpm but I don't think that is worth $4000 extra.

The rated HP from GM is more marketing than dyno reality. The LS1 was
underrated. About 305 rwhp is normal in the F-body. The C5 Z06 is around
355 rwhp so the real difference is like 50 hp not the 80 that the ratings
would have you believe. Add a mild to medium cam, headers and free flowing
inlet and exhaust and the LS1>LS6.
