Thanks for the details Bob. There look to be 2 methods of attaching AN
fittings to a stock hard line: Flare and Compression. I'll try the
compression mode first. No Flare tool to buy.
This is the direction I headed:

I actually used steel parts however but I can't find them now. I cut
the beaded part off the stock fuel line with a small pipe cutter
slid the tube nut and sleeve over the stock fuel line then put a
single flare on it. It wouldn't seal at first because the nasty seam
in the stock tubing that just wanted to split but I found a small
soft brass washer and tightened the fitting down with it clamped
between the sealing surfaces and it and it basically welded itself
to the fuel line creating a nice seal.

I have a pipe cutter... we'll see if it's small enough.
Also found this very descriptive post on how to do exactly what I
want.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction guys!

OK, I think I found a couple options that don't require a flaring

Assumes that the Miata hard line is standard/US and not metric size.
I believe I ran into this problem trying to do the same thing on a FD
RX-7. Better double-check the OD/ID measurements on it.
You also have to cut off the bead which sort of wigged me out. How
to cut it effectively without generating sparks (hacksaw?). If the
lines are dry and off the car, you should be pretty safe with any
cutting apparatus.
