If the gap is good, but it was coding, I'd replace it.

Bill,

Chad and I checked and found that the sensor does seem to be in spec
(about .035"). When added to the fact that I couldn't find any loose
wires--rubbing or otherwise--and the fact that there was a stored P0335
(Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuitry Malfunction), it sounds like
replacing the Crank Position Sensor is the best thing to do.

Any thoughts?

I like to set them on the tight side at .030". I think spec is
.040"

OK, Bryan's coming over to my place tonight. What's the proper
air gap for that sensor on an NB?

I've got feelers and I'll check it out when he's here. If it's
wrong, I'll reset it. If it's right, he can buy it and we'll replace it
after he gets it.

Yeah...I priced out a new CPS from Finishline at about
$80--nothing too bad (I wanted to call Tommy for some other parts,
anyway). I've set air gap on my old Miata, so I'm confident I can
do it here. As for wires, I can do that, too. I had
suspected that they would need replacing as well.

not always a magnet, but they're pretty reliable.
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hall_effect_sensor

they sense changes in electromagnetic field when ferrous
materials come
        close.

And they do occasionally fail. New ones aren't terribly
expensive or hard
to replace with your standard garage tool set. Setting the gap
is the
most critical part. Getting the wire in the right place is is
the hardest
        part.

Plug wires are pretty darned easy. Factory or
Magnecore--whichever is
        cheapest.

        Matt

        > No, they didn't. Guess I'll just do it myself
once I get
        the car
        > back today. It'd possibly save me having to
replace it (I
        mean, the
        > CPS is just a magnet with a wire coming out of it, right?).

        > Update from the dealer: the car had a fault code for
the
        > Crank Position Sensor (not Cam). I politely
said
        "no" when
        > they

found an arc

        > on the
        > plug wire going into the #3 cylinder and suggested
changing the
