By the way...is there anyone in the Cinci area who'd be willing to help me test
some voltage on this thing?  Aside from replacing the plugs and wires,
that seems to be the next step (outside of replacing the ECU).

As for keeping the faith, so to speak, my love of Miatae is at a pretty low
point at the moment.  I was VERY tempted to just post up saying "first one
to show up at my place with $5000 in hand can have this stupid thing".
Hopefully this thing will be solved soon--I like having a Miata, but it'd be
nice to have one that didn't need so much (non-routine) maintenance!

ya know... the wire on the crank sensor DOES run near some scary looking belts
and pulleys. Chances of nicking that wire are pretty darn good. I'd take some
time to trace that wire at least back to the firewall and assure myself of
there being no nicks in the insulation. Or did you already do this?

Keep the faith, Bryan!!! You'll figure it out.

Just saw it this morning.  Don't seem to be any wires near it, but I'm
wondering if the wiring from the aftermarket stereo components are messing with
the ECU.

Also called about the warranty and the only electric part it covers is the
alternator.  It was everything I could do to not yell at the guy on the
phone and tell him it was completely useless for any actual problems...

Since I'm effectively now no worse off, I guess I can look at it myself since
I'll be out my own expense anyway (ie no warranty coverage).

  Just
out of curiosity...where is the ECU on an 01+ car located?  I could have
sworn they put them back in the footwell instead of behind the passenger...

Perhaps the CPS slipped out of adjustment.  Vibration has
been known to cause such things to happen.
