Agreed, Randy. E85 is supposed to be equivalent to 105 octane; in fact this is stated right on the local E85 pump. Several EVO IX's (made in 2006 only) are getting 100whp just with E85. I don't expect that much with my EVI VIII (2003-2005), but 80whp is not unheard of. However, most of the performance car conversions to E85 involve numerous upgrades: fuel pumps, fuel pressure regulators, larger injectors, re-mapping the ECU, or a piggyback, or full replacement ECU, etc., etc. I was totally fascinated by the Prius test that involved NO changes to anything. I was most surprised that of any cars, why would a Prius be designed to benefit from the introductions of higher octane fuel? I could understand a performance car being tuned by knock sensor, so to speak, I was surprised that an economy car would be. It made me wonder what would happen with <fill in the blank with ANY car> when E85 would be introduced. Another good E85 candidate would be the SRT-4 Neon, which supposedly has a very sophisticated self- tuning ECU system. Jim In a message dated 6/15/2008 8:42:46 A.M. Jim, One of the benefits of alcohol as a fuel is that it has a higher octane rating than standard pump gas. If the ECU is programmed to increase ignition timing when no detonation events occur then it will increase HP over using strait 87 octane gas. The 99+ Miata ECU does this to a limited extent. It is not uncommon for people to convert to E85 simply for the HP benefits, regardless of the overall increased consumption. I also own a 04 GTO, many people have converted to E85 use simply to get the extra 40-50 hp that the ECU provides by going into full advance ignition timing.
