What you need is a Westfield ;-) Over 40 mpg and all the acceleration
and handling you can stomach. Maybe even more, according to Teri. She
gets nauseous anytime I get into the throttle hard, now that it's
turboed.

Agreed, Ray. Our Prius is the next generation, and even though it is
paid for I don't really plan on risking an E85 experiment anytime soon.
But, if someone else did the dirty work, testing, etc., I'd love to run
E85 in the Prius.

The 2gen Prius is no slouch, but it is the closest thing to a limp
biscuit on wheels. It could certainly use the extra power, and from a
geo-political point of view I'd gladly spend more per mile to send less
of my money to the Arab countries. We may be the evil Satan, but we
don't have to be the evil stupid Satan.

For those of you that own a similar Prius and want to try it
yourself, keep in mind that you will have to increase the %ethanol as
slowly as was done in the test (same for switching back) because the ECU
adapts only very slowly. Perhaps future versions will have their ECUs
reprogrammed to switch quickly like flex-fuel ECUs.

I've been reading everything I can get my hands on
concerning E85, and particularly the conversion of non-flex fuel engines
to E85. I stumbled across this academic study of a Prius where Ethanol
was gradually introduced into the fuel system in ever increasing
percentages. This was done on a dyno with considerable data logging. It
was determined that, at least in the case of the Prius, E85 could be run
with NO changes to anything - no larger injectors, no re-mapping of the
ECU, no increased fuel pressure, nadda, zip, nothing.

And, the most interesting part was that with full 85%
Ethanol the car made 20% more HP and 33% more torque just by simply
filling up at the yellow pump.

Now, my questions is this, is there anyone on this list
with a dyno and a wideband who would be interested in attempting some
E85 testing with a stock Miata?
