Ok, back from the store. Warm motor, taped threads on the gauge, 24" steady.
I am somewhat confuzzled now. Is it possible for a motor with bad compression to hold good steady vacuum? I had the compression tested twice, on two separate occasions, got bad numbers both times, and confirmed the leaking rings with a leakdown test. Also, where the heck do you pass the vacuum line through the firewall? From the engine compartment, I can see what appears to be an unused grommet on the passenger side, but I can't see it from the floor well. Should I remove the heater motor to use that, or try drilling a new one? I don't see a good spot where I can safely fit my drill.
