Actually a gear splitter might make sense. Then you could swap ratios by
flipping a switch.

I agree with your position on the Quaife gears.......I would LOVE to have
them. What is not coming through is that there are alot of people looking to
increase the MPG and I am thinking along the lines of simplifying the swap so
as to get max MPG day to day and being able to swap back to POWER off the line
easily. Hense the title of this message......Best of both worlds......

While not cheap, the Quaife gears will give you a lot more room before you
have to shift. I can hit over 40mph in first gear. Aside from being
virtually bulletproof and really tightening up the entire drivetrain I can
cruise
around in 25mph zones in first gear all day long and the gear whine turns a
lot
of heads too, hehe.

not concerned with stoplight perfomance........but it certainly would help
out with the fact that I EAT UP 1st gear now.

I have been debating with a coworker about how Elvis gets better gas mileage
now as a LS1 vs running a 4 cyl. I know it is due to the CTS diff and taller
gearing. It started me thinking.......always has the potential to get
dangerous with me.

What would a 1.6 FMII get with the CTS diff vs the Torsen I am running now.
Also, as I recall from my Torsen swap there was not alot involved in changing
it over.

What I thought would be cool is to simplify the swap by making the 1/2
shafts two piece and be able to change over the Torsen CV side over to the CTS
CV
side. Run the CTS diff for gas mileage and swap in the Torsen for having
serious fun. And if I ever have my dream come true be able to swap in the
Torsen
for SERIOUS FUN with the LS1 engine.......
