While not cheap, the Quaife gears will give you a lot more room before you have 
to shift.  I can hit over 40mph in first gear.  Aside from being virtually 
bulletproof and really tightening up the entire drivetrain I can cruise around 
in 25mph zones in first gear all day long and the gear whine turns a lot of 
heads too, hehe.
