Understood and agreed, however I was looking for some sort of method to determined absolute max.. and 20 x CR seems like it produces somewhat useable numbers.. kind of. :)

"perfect" compression for a
compression check?
Cam duration will have a big effect on compression numbers. Think about it,
valve is still open as piston goes up on comp stroke, there goes your math.
About all you can do is ask other people with the same engine what their
numbers are. And comp gauges vary all over in their relative crapitude.

Well not to shoot holes in your theory but a MSM is 9.5 compression and the
manual says that the normal PSI for compression should be 209.

AHA:
"alternatively multiply the compression ratio by 20 if you want to work in
psi"
So, what is a stock Miata, 9.5:1, right? x20 = 190psi... That jive with
what everyone has seen?
That means the LT1 would be 10.4 x 20 = 208psi...

Math and Physics? :)
Compression numbers are a pressure - lbs/sq in. You should be able to
work backwards from there to the basic fluid dynamics of a pump to
determine what the perfect pumping efficiency would be of each cylinder.
Top result from googling "calculating engine compression pressure" gets
you this:
