To my understanding, the ground wire is just an alternate path to
neutral, to prevent the chassis fro becoming electrified.
If the chassis is electrically isolated, you should be able to tie the
ground wire to it with no ill effects, and should a problem occur
making the hot line connect to the chassis, it will trip the breaker.
DISCLAIMER: I am not an EE or an electrician. So, take what I say as
exactly what it is: my understanding.
