Measure the resistance between the neutral wire (from the power cord) and the chassis. If it is isolated it should read as an open circuit from either prong.
Why do you want to convert this to a three prong plug? NPC NMC But the chassis is not what I would consider isolated, there is stuff grounded to it. NPC NMC Bill, Yes what Chad said is exactly correct (Again, assuming the chassis is isolated). No smoke leaks. Why are you adding a ground? [I did have a mono Heath Kit tube amp my dad built until it died rather spectacularly. I even know how a tube works without having to look it up, but I don't know the finer points of tube amps. I just remember the warmer sound of tube amps.] Luis - BSEE (fwiw) _____ From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Chad Douglas Sent: Monday, December 29, 2008 4:49 PM To: Bill Cardell Cc: [email protected] Subject: Re: Any electronics types out there? NPC To my understanding, the ground wire is just an alternate path to neutral, to prevent the chassis fro becoming electrified. If the chassis is electrically isolated, you should be able to tie the ground wire to it with no ill effects, and should a problem occur making the hot line connect to the chassis, it will trip the breaker. First one was bought new by my Dad in 1962-3. Question is: Is it really as simple as hooking up neutral and power the way they were and adding ground wire to chassis if I want to convert to three prong plug? Or will that make the smoke leak?
