Yup 
 
C2 (1963-1967 Sting Ray)  were the first cars to be referred to as Sting
Rays but the C3 starting in 1968 was the car the Opel looked like and it was
also introduced in 1968.  Remember Opel is a GM division so they most likely
had insight into what was coming for the Corvette.

I don't think the GT pre-dates the Corvette Stingray... (assuming that was
the context of Bill's Email).
Stingray was first used in the early 1960s.
The Opel GT came later.  Early 1970's car.
