is initially used as a telephone speech transmitter.
1951 – Pee Wee King and His Golden West Cowboys, featuring vocalist
Redd Stewart, record "Slow Poke” at RCA Studios in Chicago.
1955 – Jazz saxophonist Charlie “Bird” Parker makes his final live
performance at Birdland in New York City, with Charles Mingus, Bud
Powell, Kenny Dorham and Art Blakey.
1957 – Marty Robbins releases his single, “A White Sport Coat (And A
Pink Carnation)” b/w “Grown-Up Tears” on Columbia.
1959 – The first Grammy Awards were held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel
in Los Angeles, with Record of the Year and Song of the Year going to
"Volare" by Domenico Modugno, and Album of the Year going to Henry

1968 – The Temptations’ Eddie Kendrick and Otis Williams are
hospitalized with minor injuries after a car accident on an icy road
near Sommerset, Pennsylvania.
1970 – Janis Joplin, vacationing in Rio de Janeiro, is fined $200 in
absentia for using obscene language at a Tampa, Florida concert the
previous November.
1971 – The Rolling Stones announce they will be moving to France as
“tax exiles." In the evening, the group plays two shows on the first
night of a nine date UK tour at Newcastle City Hall in Newcastle upon
Tyne, with opening act The Groundhogs.
1973 – Pink Floyd plays the first night of the third North American
leg of their Dark Side Of The Moon tour at the Dane County Coliseum in
Madison, Wisconsin.
1973 – Elvis Presley releases his single, “Steamroller Blues” b/w
“Fool.”
1977 – The Rolling Stones perform a rare intimate show at the small El
Mocambo Tavern in Toronto.
1978 – The I.R.S. raids Jerry Lee Lewis' home at dawn to remove
$170,000 worth of automobiles to pay his tax debts.
1979 – The Jackson 5's Randy Jackson is severely injured in a car
accident, breaking both legs, and is almost killed in the emergency
room when a nurse accidently injects him with methadone.
1982 – Frank Zappa's son Dweezil and his daughter Moon Unit form a
band called Fred Zeppelin.
1987 – Simply Red appears at the Galway Leisureland in Ireland.
1989 – Time Inc. and Warner Communications merge, creating Time

1994 – Kurt Cobain ingests 60 pills in an attempt to commit suicide in
Rome.  He is in a coma for almost 24 hours before coming to.
1995 – In Los Angeles, classical guitarist Liona Boyd plays an hour-
long concert for the sequestered jurors and deputy sheriffs
participating in O.J. Simpson's murder trial.
2001 – Michael Jackson and child actor-friend Macaulay Culkin spend
the night shopping at a London record store, which stays open after
hours to accommodate the pair.
2003 – 23-year old Sian Davies is fined £1,000 plus court costs after
environmental protection officers raided her flat in Porth, Rhondda,
Wales and seized 15 amplifiers and speakers, plus 135 CDs and cassette
tapes. Davies was initially arrested for playing Cliff Richard’s music
too loud.
2004 – Brian Wilson performs SMiLE at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow.
2009 – Former Monkee Peter Tork undergoes extensive surgery in New
York for a rare form of head and neck cancer.
