1958 – Jerry Lee Lewis is booed off stage in New York City. A second
show is cancelled.
1958 – Elvis Presley holds his last recording session of the 1950’s,
recording “I Got Stung” at RCA Studios in Nashville.
1960 – Drummer Tommy Moore quits The Beatles due to lack of work and
no money.
1962 – The Beatles are featured on the BBC radio show Here We Go,
recorded at the Playhouse Theatre in Manchester. This is the last
recording of the group with Pete Best on drums.
1964 – During a second day of recording at Chess Records in Chicago,
The Rolling Stones hold an impromptu "press conference" out front of
the studio, which is quickly broken up by police.
1964 – Manfred Mann records "Do Wah Diddy Diddy."
1964 – The Beatles arrive in Sydney, Australia, at 2:35am in the
middle of a heavy downpour, and are given umbrellas and forced to ride
around on a flat-bed truck so the thousands of fans at the airport can
get a glimpse of the band. Later in the day, back in England, Ringo
Starr is discharged from the hospital after recovering from tonsil
surgery, and goes home to pack for Australia.
1964 – Elvis Presley records “Spring Fever,” “Do Not Disturb,” Cross
My Heart And Hope To Die,” “I’ve Got To Find My Baby” and “Fort
Lauderdale Chamber Of Commerce” at Radio Recorders in Hollywood for
his Girl Happy album.
1965 – Buckingham Palace announces that The Beatles will receive the
MBE award.
1966 – Elvis Presley begins filming his 26th movie, Double Trouble.
1966 – Melody Maker announces the formation of Cream, with former
members of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Manfred Mann, and The Graham
Bond Organization.
1966 – French and German media reports that The Who's singer, Roger
Daltrey, has been killed in a car crash. In actuality, Pete Townshend
was involved in a car crash but was uninjured.
1967 – Melody Maker runs this ad: "Freaky lead guitarist, bass and
drummer wanted for Marc Bolan's new group. Also any other astral
flyers like with car's amplification and that which never grows in
window boxes, phone Wimbledon 0697."
1967 – The Mamas and The Papas appear on The Ed Sullivan Show,
performing "Dedicated To The One I Love" and "Creeque Alley." Other
musical guests include The Gospel Jazz Singers, The Kane Triplets, and
opera singer Rouvaun.
1968 – Brian Jones appears in court to answer to his May 21 marijuana
bust, and chooses to go to trial by jury. Later in the day, The
Rolling Stones are recording "Sympathy For The Devil" at Olympic
Studios in London when the studio mysteriously catches on fire.
1968 – Paul McCartney records "Blackbird" in Studio 2 at Abbey Road,
while Lennon works on "Revolution 9" in Studio 3.
1969 – David Bowie rush releases his single, “Space Oddity” b/w “Wild
Eyed Boy From Freecloud” in the UK to coincide with the lunar landing
of Apollo 11.
1971 – Drunk Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson puts his hand through a
glass door, severing nerves, which keeps him off the drums for the
better part of three years.
1976 – AC/DC appears at the City Hall in Glasgow, Scotland, on the
first night of their Lock Up Your Daughters 19-date UK tour.
1976 – Wild Cherry releases their single, “Play The Funky Music” b/w
“The Lady Wants Your Money.”
1977 – The Clash's Joe Strummer and Topper Headon are kept in jail
after being arrested for spraying painting a building the previous
day, because they failed to show up at a May court hearing regarding
the theft of pillow cases from a Holiday Inn.
1983 – After a two-year engagement, drummer Alex Van Halen marries
Valeri Kendall in Los Angeles. They stay married for two months.
