1942 – Billie Holiday records "Travelin' Light" at Capitol Studios in
Hollywood.
1959 – Sam Cooke insists on racially integrated seating at his
Norfolk, Virginia concert with Jackie Wilson.
1960 – Connie Francis appears on the 12th anniversary show of The Ed
Sullivan Show, singing "Everybody's Somebody's Fool." Other musical
guests include Louis Prima with Keely Smith and Sam Butera and The
Witnesses, and TV’s Dennis The Menace, Jay North, singing “Little Boy
Blues.”
1961 – Frankie Avalon begins a 12-day tour of South America: one of
the first in that country.
1962 – Brenda Lee dislocates her neck while performing on stage at the
Latin Casino in Philadelphia and is hospitalized.
1963 – The Beach Boys record "Little Deuce Coupe" and "Surfer Girl" at
Western in Hollywood, with Brian Wilson assuming full production
duties for the first time.
1964 – The Beatles fly from Sydney to Adelaide and are met by 250,000
people along a 10-mile parade route from the airport to Town Hall.
Later in the day, The Beatles play two shows at Centennial Hall.
Meanwhile, Ringo leaves London for Australia, via San Francisco,
Honolulu and Fiji.
1964 – The Zombies record “She’s Not There,” “Summertime,” and “You
Make Me Feel Good” at Decca Studios in West Hampstead.
1965 – Sonny and Cher make their television debut on American
Bandstand, lip-synching to "I Got You Babe." Also on the show is Eddie
Hodges, who lip-synchs to "New Orleans."

1992 – Songwriter Tommy Page, along with Jordan Knight and Danny Wood
of New Kids On The Block, are acquitted of copyright infringement
charges brought by the estate of Percy Sledge for the song, "I'll Be
Your Everything," charging that their song borrowed heavily from
Sledge's tune of the same name.
1992 – Singer k.d. lang cancels a show in Owen Sound, Ontario, when
local beef farmers threaten to block the parking areas with their
tractors after lang appears in an anti-meat ad campaign.
1994 – 86-year old Cab Calloway suffers a massive stroke at his home
in White Plains, New York. He will never fully recover.
2000 – In an interview with Curve magazine, Sinead O'Connor announces
that she's a lesbian.
2000 – Bruce Springsteen is resoundingly booed at Madison Square
Garden when he introduces his new song, "American Skin (41 Shots),"
which protests the NYPD killing of an unarmed man.
2001 – A three mile section of Highway 92 in Paulding County, Georgia,
is re-named Travis Tritt Highway in honor of their hometown boy.
2002 – Music impresario Clive Calder sells the remainder of his Zomba
Music Group company to BMG Music for $2 billion, after selling shares
to BMG in 1991 and 1996. The Zomba Corporation was started in 1974 by
Calder, and partners Ralph Simon and producer John “Mutt” Lang.
2003 – The Songwriter's Hall of Fame inducts Little Richard, Van
Morrison, Queen, and Phil Collins at their annual ceremony.
2004 – Terri Clark joins the Grand Ole Opry: the first and only
Canadian female singer to be added.
2004 – Lee Ryan, of the British boy band Blue, is found guilty of
criminal damage and ordered to pay £500 compensation relating to an
incident outside the London nightclub 10 Rooms the previous December.
In court, Ryan admits to throwing punches at a photographer after
being bombarded by paparazzi when he was leaving the club, but claims
he was provoked into doing so, which Judge Caroline Tubbs accepts,
dismissing the assault charges.
2005 – Pink Floyd announces they will reunite for Live 8: the first
time Roger Waters will play with the other three since 1981.
2006 – Prince receives a Lifetime Achievement award at the 10th Annual
Webby Awards for his innovative use of the Internet.
2007 – The Canada Post issues a series of stamps honoring Canadian
recording artists, including Paul Anka, Joni Mitchell, Gordon
Lightfoot and Anne Murray.
2008 – Amy Winehouse performs at the Garage Gallery at the Center for
Contemporary Culture in Moscow for Russian billionaire Roman
Abramovich and his girlfriend Daria Zhukova. She is paid £1 million
for the one hour gig.
2011 – E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemens suffers a massive
stroke in his New Jersey home. He will be dead in six days.
