Can you elaborate a bit on the 2.0 extendable records and how
this might work?

Well, come to think of it, probably the only field you are really likely
to want to set manually to alter sorting in a separate context is the
score.  So if you're assuming that the fields of the target article are
automatically cloned onto the placeholder fields when the target
changes, I suppose you could just leave the score of the linking
article to be set manually.
