You can do this -- sort of -- by implementing access checks in PHP in the
page that displays the article. That will not prevent people that have the
possibility to author their own pages from pulling them from the database
directly (given that these pages are in the same sitegroup). 2.0, for
sure.

You can use the approval functionality to do this and not display articles
that don't have it set.
