Might be easier to start with a poem! Novels can be shorter-novella. Have seen several much less than 50,000 words. It's all about plot/ subject and keeping things tight. When I fix on certain memories for a while I probably have thought out a first draft. Complete. But it's editing that sours me- have dashed out poems in the past that were respectable/superb but one word added or subtracted and the whole thing unraveled!. First, master the sentence. Then the paragraph. Then the linking like beads on a necklace. Clasp.//I cannot stand attention or applause so fame would have been fatal. :-)
