There's still a lot that we don't understand about the role of the mind in healing. This is true of medical healing as well as non- medical healing. Consider the fact that in certain cases placebos will succeed where supposedly effective drugs don't. We don't have a good grasp on why or when a placebo will prove effective. That's why some premodern healing practices, such as bleeding the patient, were effective. Of course, in other cases, as with George Washington, they killed the patient.
