In Saul Bellow's novel The Dean's December, written long ago, Chicago
was as corrupt as Soviet Bucharest. I suspect the truth of Olympic
legacies is debt and no real impact on the economy for jobs against
more 'direct' investment. The best way to cope with the Olympic weeks
is on a croft in Scotland with no television or radio. Soon I can
imagine we will have to pay to avoid the opening and closing
ceremonies and the freakish, sycophantic commentaries. Perhaps they
will build giant casinos in Rio for the event too.
