The question implicit in the description of Orn's wonderful life is why we can't just retire at birth. I've just been reading Aristotle's 'Politics' and this more or less suggests the same. Citizens in its great societies more or less require this, work being done by others. This only goes to show there are Orns even older than the Orn himself. I have found growing old as disappointing as prayer, more or less a process of wanting something other than the rat-race, or giving up to be looked after in the asylum. I've spent some time in the last years in a form of prayer, mostly discovering the hill of beans ain't worth the candle, and failing to achieve the nirvana of not being ashamed to fart in public. I'm left with the difficult vision that the better world is rendered unachievable by desires that the people in it be different, including me.
