Well I don't know about stopingp your heart but there sure do exist some people in the world capable of slowing down not only their heart rate and breathing but also their metabolisim.
Yes hardware, I agree, I was reading a nice piece in last weeks New Scientist about the links between Conciousness and Neural activity and just how hard it is to pin such stuff down.
