I am starting two parallel threads here: This one on the negative acts
and effect of religion and religious people, and the other on the
positive deeds and effects.

Religions and religious people have done some really bad stuff,
despite that they say they are so good. Some of it is in the news,
some is hidden and some is just accepted by society with little
question. Let's use this thread to talk about those negative results
of religion and religious belief. How does religion negatively affect
children? What do the "source books" of religions say that are just
wrong?

It might be helpful to develop an accurate time line correlating the
beginning and spread of various religions to historical events and
trends in the areas of the world that come under the influence of the
religion.

Since religion has been around so long and has had such a pervasive
influence on society, it might be helpful to look at how a more
rational approach could be developed to supplant religion as the
source of answers to questions about right and wrong, goals in life,
and what happens when we die. (Then again, all this might be better
suited to a thread of its own!)
