Think of this: Our SETI teams succeeds to find aliens... They come to conquer us... It is inter planet war... Who would you side with? Earthly beings? or aliens? Humans, right? You're earthiotic. Then, you will find everything that human beings do thrilling and exciting.
Similarly earlier, the world was very divided. And people found joy in small successes of their nation. And they became patriotic... But in the latest scenario (of globalisation), if you're patriotic, it means that you have to grow up...
