As a lapsed believer, I can tell you that one of the main things that
fuelled my disbelief -- and later contempt -- of religious scripture is that
this stuff never does transcend culture. If it doesn't, well, we're long
overdue some updates from the big guy.

Some religions claim that their scriptures reflect the direct word of God,
others take a more moderate stance saying that the actual words are the
words of mortal men -- they're always men, of course -- inspired by God.
Either way, the only conclusion we can draw today is that God is bigoted and
hateful shit bag (and quite stupid). Or, more rationally, the scriptures
were written by men "of their time" and God probably doesn't exist.
