Does one have the right to sacrifice the lives of others or is this the height of hubris? It seems to me the major concern is to keep a family "safe" from harm but that depends on the values of the individual and involves sacrifice which is not a very popular virtue. One might extend this to the society that engages in wars and other murky actions- the further removed the less ability to control the consequences. This would also apply to laws that are not always fair- the greater good does not cover all circumstances. And certainly we know or have read of individuals whose potential gets lost or wasted within a particular culture. Maybe that person achieves value in a different time slot of history or family memory.//Despite the power of fate and destiny or circumstance and enviornment, it seems to me that the individual still strives with a short list- to have mattered- to the gods and oneself- and that often takes a peculiar path.// Also- there is always concern for ones children but legal responsibilty ends at a certain age- usually 18. That seems so young and immature to me at this point- like a seedling put out in chilly April.
