I am making it actually useful as a backup system for DJs--who may or may not be tech savvy--by automatically setting it up with a normal /home partition (not a flaky image file that freezes when it gets close to filling up and can't have data deleted from it), a music partition readable by Windows and OS X, making it bootable by any x86 computer including Macs, and run from a live image. Other features include the ability to easily add software and startup scripts without rebuilding your own ISO image and system recovery tools such as GParted, GRUB, TestDisk, and FSArchiver (I don't know why every live distro doesn't have those). I've been using Fedora as my only OS for about 7 years so I am familiar with it. Most importantly, Fedora has great tools for making custom Fedora Remixes. I am not familiar with Ubuntu so I'd have to learn a lot more to get started. I also don't trust Canonical (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unity_%28user_interface%29#Privacy_controversy and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mir_%28software%29#Controversy , among other reasons).
What advantage would building a live distro for Mixxx with Tiny Core Linux have over my project or DidJiX? > As far as naming, someone is already using the term MixxxOS, as linked > on that page. If Unetbootin or any other installer could do what I've been working on, there wouldn't be much of a use for this project. I think modifying Unetbootin or Fedora's livecd-iso-to-disk or liveusb-creator would have been more trouble than writing my own shell script. None of those are designed to make universally bootable USB drives that will work on all x86 PCs including Macs, whether they boot with BIOS or EFI. Also, in my testing, normal (not live image in RAM) installs are way too slow to be useful for DJing. Maybe in the future when USB 3.0 is ubiquitous this won't be an issue, but that is not how it is today. > As far as naming, someone is already using the term MixxxOS, as linked > on that page. I am also making it easy for the OS to rebuild itself with a minorly patched version of Fedora's livecd-creator program so anyone can modify it and the project won't be lost if I mess up my computer. It will be easy for someone else to take over the project if I decide to leave it or take a back seat in the future. Right now I don't think there's much I need help with other than making graphical branding and seeding the torrent when I publish it. I'd welcome anyone else who wants to improve it though. Familiarity with Fedora would help. How about I publish an initial version under the name Crossfade GNU/Linux and then you can decide if it is of sufficient quality to become an official Mixxx project, at which point we could reconsider using the name Live Mixxx GNU/Linux? > But definitely link to it on that wiki page at the very least, and > when we update the Web site, we should include an additional "Bare > metal" item under the OS list. Of course :) I have one last bug to take care of before I'm ready to release it. Whenever I get a chance to borrow a Mac for like half an hour (when my roommate gets home and isn't using hers) I should be able to take care of it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dive into the World of Parallel Programming.
