What's the reason people buy ANYTHING, if not for the image? I think there
are plenty of reasons people buy an SUV. They're portrayed as safe
vehicles (which they are, if they don't roll over), you've got a good view
of traffic, they _DO_ offer more utility than a sedan or small wagon, and
they're perceived as good looking. Those are all pretty valid reasons to
buy a car. In a lot of ways they're better in heavy traffic; in a lot of
ways they're worse. These are more 'logical' reasons than buying something
because it's fast, handles well and gets chicks, which is why people buy
sportscars. Think of them as sportscars for the criminally boring.

They're trying to turn a profit, which _IS_ why they're in business. Every
review I've read of it has been _very_ favorable. If it handles almost as
well as a 5-series; goes almost as well; stops almost as well; has the same
level of fit and finish, _AND_ appeals to people who can afford it, more
power to 'em. Yeah, it's ugly to us, but it's not ugly to Joe Schmoe on
the street. Hey, BMW has turned out a vehicle that's faster around a track
than some sports cars, seats five comfortably, AND will tow a fairly good
sized chunk of metal. Who cares? They're not even claiming that it's a
real SUV (although it does have land rover's useless hill decent crapola).
It seems like a perfectly reasonable vehicle to me. Hey, _I'd_ never buy,
say, a Chevy Impalla SS or a used taxi cab for that matter, but I can see
the appeal.
