the latter. they're visible in the following pic, directly above the left
pair of t-bodies.

according to their page, the J&S Safeguard also controls and retards all of
cylinders independently based on the knock signals it recieves- i think this
is more advanced than the stock config, and i'd much rather spend the couple
hundred bucks on the J&S than whatever the current cost is for a new
shortblock anyway, because the compression numbers on the motor that's in my
GTI now are really nice. =)
