The mounting holes for the 3 bolts on the bottom of the ball joints are different for 17mm and 18mm ball joints. The "middle" bolt is closer to the inside of the car on the later style joints/cotrol arms. -Dave '91 Jetta GTX 16V '88 Jetta GLI 16V '84 Vanagon
