Truth be told - I once cut out a spare tire well so I could mount the muffler on my '79 Scirocco. It didn't matter much since it was strictly an autocross/track car that usually had a spare set of tires, a jack and an air tank in it at all times. Besides, it rusted out about 3 months later which is standard for any Mk1 Scirocco.
