Bryon, The original 16V list was started in 1997/8 with donations and maintained with raffles all of which were on a voluntary basis. It was always open for anyone to join but the fund came from donations of a few people who wanted to see the list come together and continue. This was a long time ago before ad supported sites like YahooGroups existed.
But even now that YahooGroups exists and is free it does not mean it is the best place to put the list just because it is free. I know the .com world very well and have been part of two very large ad supported sites and believe me Yahoo _will_ begin charging for these services eventually. Unless there is a major change in the online ad-revenue world, Yahoo will not be able to afford to continue offering these services for free. They have already begun charging for some of their content and it is only a matter of time before they begin to charge in some form for their groups. You get what you pay for.
