Matt,

        Where/How exactly did you run the supplemental ground?  I'm thinking of
running one on my 16V Passat, and probably on the GLi, too, just for the
sake of it.  Seems all 16Vs suffer from poor grounding, whether it be a Mk1,
A1, or A2

Another thing that A1s are infamous for is a bad ground.  Check that
the grounds are clean and tight.  Heck - even try running a
supplemental ground.  My 16v Slorocco wouldn't start in cold weather
regardless of what I did - after replacing every sensor, the 5th
injector and a few other pieces we FINALLY diagnosed a faulty ground
cable.  Now that it's in, the car starts easily even in our balmy 20
degree weather.
