The easiest supplemental ground is from the head to the negative
terminal on the battery.  The ground issues tend to be more chassis
related - the A1s are the worst with the A2s running a close second. 
I don't believe that the Passats suffered from grounding issues
although is certainly wouldn't hurt to run a supplemental ground
anyways.
