Seeing the list running again inspired me to ask (another..) question. I
had all of the motor mounts replaced on my 92 GLI last August by a
competent garage (German Motors in Providence, RI). After replacement, the
rear motor mount was found to be defective (how can a motor mount be
defective?)- the car had a lot of vibration on acceleration, and felt like
a tank. They replaced the bad mount for free, and the car was a whole lot
better. Fast forward to two weeks ago- I had new tires mounted at the local
Midas by my house (Goodyear GT-HRs). All of a sudden, the car feels like it
has a bad mount.. but not all of the time! Sometimes it feels great, and
then sometimes when accelerating it feels like a mount is totally dead
(everything rattles, etc). Looked under the car, don't see any broken
exhaust hangers, and no rubbing. Took the car into German Motors, they said
the motor mounts looked fine. Anyone have any ideas? I would think that if
a mount was bad, it would feel bad all of the time- it only feels bad about
half of the time. I'm still not convinced that the exhaust is rubbing a
little bit and I'm just not seeing it (it's freezing up here- being outside
under the car is something I can only really take for a few minutes..).
It's pretty annoying though, especially since I spent a lot of cash on the
new mounts.
Thanks!
Andrew
