An ATB/TSD is very nice to have, especially in the winter. Normally you don't notice much difference in daily driving. Sometimes you can feel it work when cornering at higher acceleration rates. The Quaife site lists different part numbers for an ATB for the 020 vs. 02A transmission, may be worth checking to see if the TSD is transmission specific. The original transmission for the GTI 16V is the 020 9Y (or AGB), both w/100mm flanges, and the TSD should be a straighforward install. The only problem I've had is the R&P go out under acceleration. That required a rebuild, and is when I installed the Quaife.

The 02A transmission is different, as it is cable shifted, uses a hydraulic clutch and may have other items requiring adapting. I'm not sure how much work it would be to do this conversion.

As for the gearing, the 020 9Y has a pretty good setup, fairly well spaced and enjoyable for daily driving. If you are looking at doing a lot of highway driving you could install an overdrive 5th in an 020 very easily. This would give you a good setup for around town, and lower RPM's on the highway. Another option would be to swap out your R&P to a (numerically) lower ratio.

Subject: [a2-16v-list] Need help with Transmission selection
Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 23:01:52 -0800

I've revived the rebuilding/restoration of my A2 Golf and I just purchased a
Peloquin Torque Sensing Differential for the O2O transmission from WRD
Racing. They had a nice price on the diff and the bolt kit.
See http://www.wrdusa.com
WRD already had a good price listed for the LSD but there was an additional
discount because of an organized VORTEX group buy.

Now my dilema. My Golf was originally a 1.8l 8V with an ACN 5sp
transmission. This tranny has the gear ratios I prefer for freeway driving.
However, This trans isn't known for its strength and its equipped with the
smaller 90mm flanges. So I don't think this would be a good candidate for a
rebuild and LSD installation. I know I could change the flanges to 100mm but I think I remember the trannies from the early MKIIs had several weaknesses.
The guys at WRD Racing suggested I look into MKIII 2.0l gearboxes because
they would have the 100mm flanges and the taller gearing.

Any input from your experiences would be appreciated? Any suggestions?

-Les
