Deer are incredibly stupid animals - we like to refer to them as really tall
rats.

A friend of mine, an ardent autocrosser, was walking across a field to a store
at lunchtime in semi-rural VA.  He's one of those keenly aware people but
apparently he never saw what hit him until he was on the ground.  As he looked
up, he saw the rear-end of a deer "winking" as it ran away from a hit-and-run.

Sorry to hear about the deer strike - living in the country, that's one of my
big concerns as well.  Everytime I see deer (which is frequently), I start
playing a myriad of worst-case scenarios thru my pea-sized brain about what to
expect and how to react.
