Regarding the sound issues, I'm thinking it's due to pulseaudio, not too 
sure, as I don't use Ubuntu myself.

Regarding the swap space, what you have to do is resize the partition. 
This can be done by using a live cd -- (the Ubuntu live cd can be used 
here) or the gparted live cd.
Resizing is done like this : 
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/resize/resizing.htm. You can 
probably resize from both sides of a partition. This process will take 
some time though, as gparted spends a lot of time doing consistency 
checks - still, make sure to back up your data.

About the hardware, sorry I can't help there. Drivers on Linux can be a 
problem.
