Try using gparted. It is great at disk scanning and if your disk is seen by the 
system, it will tell you about it. It may even tell you the format of the drive 
and indicate how to correct it. (by a chkdsk scan)

I have an old machine, an ASUS A7N8X-X motherboard and I've added a PCI USB 2
card that does power whatever is plugged into it, BUT, if I connect an
external drive, USB stick, card reader, etc, it doesn't appear...
Any ideas anyone?
