You could try Debian.   It's pure free software, as long as you don't 
activate the "nonfree" option.

And you won't find it all that different from Ubuntu, once you get it 
installed, except, of course, that all the non-free stuff is missing.
Ubuntu is made by copying the current bleeding-edge version of Debian 
(caled "sid" or "unstable") and debuging it furiously for six months, 
adding Canonical's own stuff and other proprietary device drivers) 
and stuff (like some device drivers), then releaseing it as an 
Alitterated Animal.

I use Debian testing for the desktop, Debian stable for the 
server.
